MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Our company was founded on January 4th, 1989 with a capital of TL 100 million. The
company’s purpose and main field of activity is Construction, Engineering, Operation and
Maintenance Services for Electricity Production, Transmission and Distribution Facilities, and
production and trade of materials required for these facilities. Our company has been actively
operating in line with this purpose for 20 years.
In these 20 years, we have managed to stay erect and stably grow despite all adversities and
crises experienced in our sector and country. As of end of year 2008, our capital is
YTL 6 million, with a turnover of US$ 40 million. This year, we are increasing our capital
to YTL 10 million. Our target turnover for 2009 is US$ 50 million.
Also as of end of 2008, we have put our signatures on the production of 80 of the 533 154kV and 380kV Transmission Substations, and our market share in this field is 15%. Furthermore, we have been carrying out the operational services of a total of 38 transmission substations successfully for nearly 15 years.
Despite gaining a significant market share over the last 20 years in the field of Construction and
Undertaking Services for Electricity Distribution Facilities, which is one of our Company’s major
field of activity, we have lost our competitive power and service delivery power due to
management problems in public companies, who act from an employer position, in addition to
the excessive and unfair competition environment in the sector. Therefore, as of end of 2007,
we have decided to temporarily leave this sector. As known, total privatization of the electricity
distribution sector is on the agenda. First of all, we want to take part in the privatization. We are
planning to resume our activities in the field of Construction and Operation of Distribution
Facilities that will be transferred to private sector as a result of privatization.
In Turkey, with an installed power of 41 thousand MW in electricity generation, a total of
198 billion kWh electricity was generated and offered for consumption in 2008. The demand
projection for year 2023 is 500 billion kWh. To achieve this production, it is necessary to reach
an installed power of 100 thousand MW, which means an addition of 60 thousand MW to the
current installed power. For the transmission of this power, the number of substations, which
currently is 533, must be increased to at least 800, and the Transmission Grid which is
currently 46 thousand kms must be increased up to 75 thousand km. The investment
necessary for these additional transmission facilities is at least US$ 10 billion. In the next
15 years, our biggest aim will be to get a share of 1.5-2 billion dollars in this investment
package of US$10 billion. In other words, in the next 15 years, we will have to increase our
average annual turnover to over US$ 100 million.
We have entered the electricity production field with Güngör Enerji Üretim ve Ticaret A.Ş., the
company we have established to this end. 3 HEPPs are still at the licensing stage in the
Eastern Black Sea region. Our target here is to reach an installed power of 10-15 MW with
an annual production of 50 million kWh.In addition, we want to increase our annual
production to 100 million kWh by building a 10-15 MW WPP.
In the coming years, one of the most significant steps to avoid a shortage in electricity supply
in Turkey will be to ensure that TEİAŞ (Türkiye Elektrik İletim A.Ş.), the owner and operator of the
Turkish national grid, has financial and administrative autonomy to enable it to make
decisions entirely in line with the system requirements, with no influence from conjectural
developments and independent of any authority, in the programming and financing of its
transmission system investments. This is the only solution that will ensure timely completion
of the abovementioned transmission system investments. Otherwise, production plant
investments, which have been progressing positively, will fail to come to life due to increasing
problems in connecting to the transmission system.
Yours sincerely,
Mustafa GÜNGÖR
Chairman of the Board
